This Weekend

Friday is partly sunny, 47 in the morning and 63 by midday, so wear a fleece you can shed. Saturday starts at 49 and tops out near 60 with showers likely, so plan costumes that fit over a rain jacket. Sunday is mild and steady, 55 to 66, and a light sweater is plenty.

### THE READ

#### [The Riverwalk wants to reach Hillside Road, and the price just went up](https://www.chicagotribune.com/2026/10/16/naperville-riverwalk-commission-wants-to-keep-full-trail-connection-for-south-extension-hillside-gateway-project/)

The Riverwalk's south extension has been in the works for more than a decade: carry the low-flow path along the river from Martin Avenue all the way to Hillside Road. Now it costs more than planned. The draft 2027 budget lists the south extension and Hillside Gateway project at $6.8 million, so city staff drew up cheaper versions, one around $1.79 million that drops most of the new path and one around $3.2 million that ends at an electrical substation. On October 14 the Riverwalk Commission said keep the whole thing; a trimmed design that still reaches Hillside runs about $6 million. About $1.5 million in outside money is already set aside, and the city still hopes to put it out to bid this year. It's one of about a dozen projects lined up for the Riverwalk's 50th birthday in 2031.
